Yes, if you want to scan both paper tickets and also tickets presented on a smartphone, you will need to have a 2D scanner if you are looking at rugged handheld devices from the hardware tab.

Alternatively, you can use the free iOS and/or Android apps to scan in tickets. When using the app, the device's camera will read both paper tickets and barcodes displayed directly from smartphones.
