You can still sell memberships without having Square or Stripe as a payment gateway. However, you cannot sell Recurring memberships otherwise known as memberships that renew monthly, yearly, etc. If you attempt to set up a recurring membership and do not use Square or Stripe as your payment gateway, you will see a message like this:
You are seeing this message because Square and Stripe are the only payment gateways that support a secure method called tokenization. When a customer enters their credit card information, Stripe and Square generate a token that represents this credit card. The actual credit card details are stored securely on Stripe and Square's servers, not on our systems. This token is then used for subsequent transactions, ensuring that sensitive credit card information is not stored on our servers, reducing our risk and PCI compliance burden. Both Stripe and Square have built-in support for recurring payments. By leveraging their APIs, we can set up recurring charges that automatically process at predefined intervals (monthly, annually, etc.).
Other payment gateways do not have the tokenization capability, which is why you cannot sell memberships that have a recurring payment. You can still take advantage of Memberships if you do not have Square or Stripe, it will just need to be a one-time purchase rather than a recurring payment.
If you would like to change your payment gateway to Stripe or Square, you can click on either one to get set up today.
