New Feature: Partial Payments for Memberships
You can now accept partial payments on eligible membership purchases, giving your box office more flexibility when a patron is not ready or able to pay the full membership balance at once. This feature works similarly to partial payments for event and package orders, while adding a few membership-specific safeguards. Partial payments are available for single-purchase memberships only. Recurring memberships will continue to require full payment at checkout.
How it worksWhen an authorized staff member processes an eligible membership order, they can choose Make a partial payment during checkout and enter the amount the patron would like to pay.For example, if a membership costs $100 and the patron pays $40, the order will show a remaining balance of $60. The membership will remain inactive until the full balance has been collected.Additional partial payments can be collected later. Once the final payment brings the balance to $0, the order becomes fully paid and the membership is activated. At that point, the membership's benefits are finalized and any applicable membership notifications are sent.
How to use partial payments for a membership- Add the patron's single-purchase membership to the order.
- Continue to checkout as you normally would.
- Under the payment options, select Make a partial payment.
- Enter the amount the patron is paying today and complete the payment.
- The order will remain in Balance Due status until the remaining amount is collected.
- When the patron is ready to pay again, open the order and use Collect balance due.
- Continue collecting payments as needed. When the remaining balance is paid in full, the membership will automatically become active.
What happens to membership benefits? While a membership has a balance due, the membership itself remains inactive, and benefits such as coupons or other finalized membership benefits are not issued until the order has been fully paid.If the membership includes limited inventory, such as tickets, seats, or products, that inventory is accounted for when the initial payment is successfully processed. This helps prevent those items from being sold to another patron while the membership order still has a balance.
Who can accept a partial payment?Partial membership payments are a box-office feature. The staff member must have permission to process partial payments. Patrons purchasing on the public ticketing site will not see this option, and staff members without the appropriate permission will not be able to use it.
What about recurring memberships?Recurring memberships are not eligible for partial payments. Because recurring memberships require a valid card and payment method on file for future charges, the initial purchase must still be paid in full.
What if the patron does not complete the purchase?A membership order with a remaining balance can be canceled. Because the membership has not yet been fully paid, the subscription remains inactive. Any payments already collected can then be handled through the existing refund process as appropriate.
A little more flexibility at the box officePartial membership payments give your team another way to accommodate patrons while still ensuring memberships are not activated until payment is complete. Whether a patron needs to split a larger membership purchase into two payments or simply wants to pay the remaining balance at a later date, your staff can now manage that process directly through the order. - Add the patron's single-purchase membership to the order.
