How can I update the credit card information on a recurring donation? - Wed - Aug 6, 2025 - 12:06pm

You can update a reccuring donation in Stripe without cancelling the current recurring donation.
1. Log into your Stripe account
2. Go to the Customers tab
3. At the top of the Customers tab, click the "Repeat Customers" button
4. Find the customer in question on the short page of returned results and click on their name
5. Under Payment Methods, click "Add" to add a new one.
6. Once the new credit card is added, click the 3 dots to the right of that card's information and click "Set as Default"
7. You can leave the old card there, or you can remove it to be completely certain it's gone.
The process for updating a recurring donation in Square is a bit different from Stripe. Square doesn’t currently allow you to change the payment method on an active recurring payment.Here’s how you can update it:- Log in to your Square Dashboard at squareup.com/dashboard.
- Go to Customers and open the donor’s profile.
- Under Cards on File, click Add Card to enter the new payment method.
- Once added, go to Subscriptions (or Recurring Invoices, depending on how it was set up).
- If Square gives you the option to select the new card for the existing donation, you can do so.
- If not, you’ll need to cancel the current recurring donation and create a new one using the updated card on file.
- Log in to your Square Dashboard at squareup.com/dashboard.
