Why can't I process a return when a transaction was more than 120 days ago? - Fri - Aug 26, 2011 - 12:27pm

  • Many gateways limit the length of time after a transaction was initially processed to process refunds. With some gateways, like Authorize.net, you will be unable to process a refund directly onto the customer's credit card if the transaction occurred more than 120 days ago. The time period is dictated directly from your gateway.

Some payment gateways, like Stripe, do not have restrictions on how many days after a transaction occurred a refund can be made.

Since your payment gateway is preventing the electronic refund back to the card, the best way to handle the refund would be to issue a check and mail it to the billing address on file for that order. Then, in ThunderTix from the Order in question click "Initiate Refund". Enter the amount of the check and maybe the check number for the refund and choose "External Refund". That way, your records in ThunderTix remain accurate for refunds processed outside of the platform.
