What are fundraising campaign levels for donations and how are they different from donor classifications? - Tue - Jul 15, 2025 - 4:57pm

  • When setting up a fundraising campaign in ThunderTix, you’ll come across two helpful tools: Donor Classifications and Donation Levels. While both are used to organize and encourage giving, they serve slightly different purposes. Here’s a breakdown to help you use both effectively:

    Donation Classification:

Classifications are used to categorize the purpose or nature of a donation. This is an internal tool primarily used for reporting, accounting, and analyzing donor trends. You can classify a donation by:

Source (e.g., Individual, Corporate, Foundation, Government)

    Type (e.g., One-time Gift, Recurring, In-kind, Matching)

Purpose (e.g., Capital Campaign, Scholarship Fund, General Operations)

For example,  an in-kind corporate gift to a scholarship fund might be classified as:

    Source: Corporate

    Type: In-kind

    Purpose: Scholarship

These classifications are especially valuable for nonprofits that need to generate year-end reports, fulfill grant requirements, or track donor behaviors over time. Please see this discussion for more details regarding Donor Classifications- What are Donor Classifications?

    Donation Levels:

Levels define the amount of a donation and often tie directly to donor engagement, recognition, or perks. These are visible to customers and are designed to encourage higher giving by suggesting meaningful donation amounts.

    Typical levels might include:

    Bronze – $100–$499

    Silver – $500–$999

    Gold – $1,000–$4,999

    Platinum – $5,000+

Some organizations customize these even further with mission-aligned names and include benefits like public recognition (a donor wall, playbill recognition, etc.) , thank-you gifts, or event invitations. Donation levels help boost average gift size and give customers clarity about the impact their donation makes.

    In Summary:

Classifications = for internal organization, tracking, and reporting

Levels = for public-facing donation tiers tied to engagement and incentives

Using both tools together gives you a great way to manage donations behind the scenes while encouraging and rewarding patron generosity on the front end.
