What do I need to do for the new credit card security chip? - Thu - Sep 17, 2015 - 10:51am

As an Internet-based solution, ThunderTix is built with a connection to your payment gateway using an Internet merchant account. By definition, Internet merchant accounts are considered 100% "card-not-present" transactions. The USB credit card reader many of you use with ThunderTix is designed only to make those transactions in person faster, but they are still going through your Internet merchant account. They are also considered a "keyed" transaction rather than a "swiped" transaction even though you utilize the card reader to swipe the card.

We fully support EMV credit card processing for US-based venues using Stripe as the payment gateway. Learn about all credit card readers available through ThunderTix below:

The credit card chip is not yet supported for online transactions for organizations outside of the United States.

Credit cards with chips still have the same magnetic strip for reading via a swipe and can still be swiped as usual. If you use a separate card swipe, or terminal, that connects to a retail merchant account -- outside of ThunderTix -- at your location, you'll want to touch base with your credit card processor for that retail account to determine if you need a new terminal that supports the enhanced security chip.
